Task guide

Open in Word, and page numbers

Edit a document in Word on your own computer straight from Docavra, each save coming back as a new version, and number the pages of what the firm prints.

Open in Word

On a Word, Excel or PowerPoint document, choose Open in Word (on a computer). The file opens in the program on your computer; work as you always do. Each time you save, the save comes back to Docavra as a new version with you as its author, and is checked for viruses like any upload before anyone else can open it. A template's draft opens the same way from the template's page.

While you have it open, the document is taken out to you, so others see who has it and open it to read only. Closing it in Word puts it back.

Docavra opens it to read only, and says why, when:

  • you may read it but not change it;
  • someone else has it out (it names who);
  • the version is signed or approved;
  • a wall or a legal hold stands in the way.

When the opening runs out

An opening lasts 8 hours unless the firm changes Open in Word lasts (hours). A save after that is refused, and nothing is lost in Word: choose Open in Word again in Docavra and save again.

On a phone or without Word

A phone or tablet has no desktop Word to open, so the button is not offered there. Use Take it out for editing, download the file, and upload the new version when done.

The letterhead, under Settings, Firm, Branding, Letterhead, carries two choices for everything the firm prints:

  • Number every page: "Page 1 of 3" at the foot of every page.
  • Repeat the regulated details on every page: pages after the first carry the registration, tax numbers and partners at their foot.

A template may turn page numbers off for its own documents with Number the pages, whatever the letterhead says.
